The Monash University Museum of Art Project comprised 2 stages. Stage one included the refurbishment of an existing ground floor university space into galleries, administration and support facilities. Notably the works consisted of installing a multimillion dollar air conditioning system, including air locks, humidity controls and specialised air monitoring facilities. Unique materials were selected for finishes, including exposed hardwood timber wall framing, perforated metal ceilings, and Eco panels (felt cloth) to walls. A number of buildability and staging challenges were present during the works, given the seven floors of building space above were continually occupied. Essential services needed to be maintained and noisy works required carefully sequenced, so not to disrupt the occupants above, including a sleep therapy clinic. A multitude of stakeholders, including Monash Capital Works, consultants, facilities management, student organisations, the Art Faculty and surrounding tenancies also required careful attention, so to cater for the varying needs over the duration of works.
The Monash University Museum of Art Stage 2 comprised of external works to accommodate the newly completed gallery space adjacent. The works consisted of removal of existing car parking and vegetation, and completion of new hard & soft landscaped areas. Notable features of the scope of works included preparations for a future seventeen meter high steel sculpture.
