PROJECT: Bialik College
Architect: Ron Unger Architects
The new state of the art Sports and Recreation Facility for Bialik College in Hawthorn was
constructed under a very tight programme and budget. The facility boasts a stunning 8
lane salt chlorinated 25 metre swimming pool with associated changing and administrative
facilities, twin competition basketball courts, gymnasium with trampoline pit and a gym with
weights and aerobics facilities. There is also a secure basement car-park with 97
parking bays and a table tennis room with storage facilities.
The facility includes a number of complex design details within the pool and basketball
area such as the curved wall which weaves between the columns in the pool area and the
galvanised portal frames in the basketball hall. Project difficulties were overcome through
good communication between site personnel, the architect and client.
Construction of the facility required a number of innovative
methods to be adopted, due to complex design details and a
tight construction budget. The 18 x 25 metre swimming pool includes balance and back wash tanks and
was constructed after the external structure was erected. The
complex also boasts a fully automated 'dial-up' control system
to monitor dehumidification levels, pool filtration and central
services, allowing staff to control the entire complex from a
single station.
