PROJECT: Chisholm Institute of TAFE
Architect: Cox Architecture
As part of the ongoing capital works programme at Chisholm, Walton were engaged to upgrade
the Business Enterprise Centre at the Frankston Campus. The new two storey addition to
the existing building framework comprises new computer laboratories and classrooms,
open plan offices and administrative areas for staff and a number of smaller break-out study
areas for students. Designed to meet stringent environmentally sustainable design criteria
set by Chisholm to meet a 5 star green star rating, the architecture knits together the unique
building fabric and creates a very user friendly urban space.
Utilising ESD principals such as natural ventilation and lighting the
building also encompasses a tall thermal stack atrium space with
operable ventilation louvers. The lighting system has been designed
to adjust to the changing lighting conditions throughout the day and
switch on or off by movement sensors in the rooms.
The majority of the external façade is made up of a combination of
corrugated sheet metal and a glazed curtain wall with louvers. The
corrugated sheeting travels in both a horizontal and vertical pattern
to create shadows cast by the sun and creates the illusion of varying
colours within the metal.
The architect's selection of relatively simple materials and an
understated palette of materials were necessary to achieve the
unifying addition to the fragmented existing built fabric on the
campus.
