PROJECT: Coal Services Training and Support Centre
Architect: Greg Butler
In November 2006 Walton was engaged by Coal Services to
construct a uniquely designed mine training and support
centre in Woonona on the NSW south coast. This world
class complex includes a subterranean system of tunnels,
mazes and ramps that are used as a mine shaft simulator to
train the workforce that operates in underground mines.
The simulator can emulate ledge fall hazards, overhead rock
falls, dangerous gas leaks, fire and flooding. All tunnels have
no lighting or exit signs and require extensive ventilation. The
tunnel system can be altered to ensure the participants do
not get used to the same sequence of tunnels. The system is
controlled by a centralised computer station above ground
that operates and monitors gas, smoke, temperature and air
flow. This system also contains black light cameras that can
monitor all participants through zero visibility smoke. All
participants wear a special tracking device which monitors
location and vital signs and transmits that information to the
control centre to ensure safety for all trainees.
Storage areas for emergency equipment and vehicles,
administration offices, onsite doctor and nurse station,
practical training rooms and a 60 car park lot are also part of
the training centre. |
