The refurbishment and upgrade works to the Legislative Assembly Chamber for the
Parliament of Victoria is an impressive example of a quality refurbishment under strict
heritage guidelines. One of the most significant elements was the total reconstruction of
the members seating to the original horseshoe configuration of the 1850s. Another major
element was the integration of a mechanical sub-floor air conditioning system feeding the
chamber with climate controlled air from the vaults below the floor. For the first time since
the 1850s the members have controlled heating and cooling in the chamber.
Other works included provision of disable access via a lifting platform to the chamber,
significant alterations to the brass balustrades and seating to the public galleries, acoustic
and heritage timber panelling and lighting upgrades as well as internet and data facilities to
individual members seating.
With extreme time constraints imposed on the final
design and delivery of the project, Walton was appointed
as Construction Manager to tender and vet all construction
packages whilst delivering a project of exceptional quality.
The project team showed their capacity to drive and control
the key areas of cost, time and quality as well as the flexibility
to liaise with all consultants and authorities as existing
conditions were uncovered often requiring appropriate heritage
documentation and design accommodation.
This project won the
Master Builders Association of Victoria
Excellence in Construction Award
in 2004.
