PROJECT: Life Saving Victoria
Architect: Demaine Partnership
Life Saving Victoria, through its amalgamation with Royal Life Saving Australia (Vic Branch)
and Surf Life Saving Victoria, required a new larger premise for its headquarters. The result
is a stunning new facility on the Sandridge Beach foreshore. Located on land leased from
the Port of Melbourne it pays great consideration to the immediate surrounding natural
landscape, and is a contextual building constructed from natural materials, many of which have been
recycled from local origin.
Good communication and a pro-active attitude between sub-contractors and consultants
resulted in the speedy resolution of project difficulties. This provided for a positive environment
for the site team responsible for the co-ordination of the many trades needed for the
construction of this striking building.
The two curved buildings required complex set-out requirements
from radius points located 70 metres away. The curved roofs and
sweaping eaves provided challenges for the steel fabricator and
roof plumber, both in design detailing and installation in a gusting
foreshore environment.
In ground services and concrete works were programmed to
minimise disruption from the tides to excavated trenches. All
consultants were extremely responsive and creative in resolving
issues between the steel structure, services and architectural
design requirements.
