This architecturally detailed project included the construction of a new three level performing
arts space in the heart of the existing school campus, which required demolition and
relocation of four existing classrooms. Refurbishments were also undertaken to the existing
small hall and chapel to include meeting and function areas as well as associated catering
facilities. The project also included extensive new landscaping throughout the campus. The
entire works were competed whilst the school remained fully operational.
This project was unique as it completed the progressive upgrades of significant works undertaken at the Melbourne
Grammar Junior School Campus. The school, which had grown
rapidly over the past 80 years, no longer had adequate facilities
to accommodate large student numbers for functions. The aim
was to establish a new focal point for the school through striking
functional architecture within its existing heritage. A design
competition, won by Peter Elliott Architects, resulted in the built
form we find on the campus today.
Works included demolition of four existing classrooms to create
adequate space for the new facility in the heart of the campus.
Timing was of the essence as a portion of the works needed to
be completed during the semester break (relocation of classrooms
and refurbishment of the existing hall). The chapel which
also required refurbishment was to remain operational at all
times, which necessitated the majority of works to be performed
outside of normal working hours.
