PROJECT: Ruyton Girls School
Architect: Architectus
This project comprises of two new buildings which both abut to existing buildings within
the school grounds. The first of the new buildings, known as the RTC Building, is of brick
construction and designed to blend into the existing building framework visible from the main
entrance of the school. The works consisted of a new three storey building including undercroft,
a new drama and theatre facility in the basement and a new IT facility and
library on the ground and upper levels. Works also included major refurbishments to the
existing building where it meets the new.
The second building, known as the Jacobs
Building, consisted of a new three storey construction extending into an existing building, which
itself underwent major refurbishment to marry seamlessly into the new. This building is of a more
modernist palette of neutral rectangular metal panels and glass, and includes new arts and
graphics facilities and classrooms.
Complex projects such as these are often a costly exercise, however by working closely with the design and consultant team numerous
cost savings were achieved through clever structural design
and material selection. In total a saving of close to $1 million
was achieved across the project. This saving allowed for the
construction of new arts and graphic facilities within the Jacobs
Building. Site access and delivery of materials also required
precise planning and management by Walton and the architects,
as well as good communication with Ruyton School to accomodate the school
remaining fully operational throughout the works.
