PROJECT: St Lukes Hospital
Architect: Evans & Peck
The first stage of the St Luke’s Hospital Complex
refurbishment was a challenging mix of technical fit-out and
construction work. To add to this challenge major demolition
had to be carried out over the Christmas shutdown period.
This situation meant that there were considerable demolition
works that subsequently needed to be done whilst the
hospital was operating.
Significant problems with latent conditions relating to the
construction of a new 5 storey fire stair were dealt with as
works proceeded on levels 4 & 5. All the while levels 1, 2
and 3 continued to operate. The client demonstrated a
practical will to have the project finished successfully and
very soon a good working relationship was developed
between all parties to the contract.
Walton created a new sleep studies centre for St Lukes
complete with articulated and concealed cameras, a
computer monitoring centre and special facilities for the
further understanding of sleep disorders. As well as this a
new bariatric ward was created. Walton gained a greater
understanding of the operations of the St Lukes Hospital
Complex and, reciprocally, St Lukes Hospital Complex
gained a greater understanding of the construction process. It
has been this mutual process of learning and cooperation that
has enabled both parties to negotiate Stage 2 of the
refurbishment successfully in November 2007. |
